Working on behalf of our friends at SRD group, Leeds Castle Fireworks posed an interesting challenge – the audience are situated 80-100m across the castle lake from the location of the main PA. While delay towers are used across the bank in front of the audience (supplied by SRD) the clients like the audio to come from the same location as the fireworks – the castle. This sort of distance doesn’t bode well for audio particularly when taking into account the huge temperature variations in November, made worse by the vast amount of water cooling the air.
We used a single stripe of 16 Vera36 boxes from flown from one of SRDs PA towers. Pretty much set in a straight line, this number of boxes provides excellent coupling and power to throw across the lake. Grouped in 3’s and powered by SRDs Powersoft X4s, we were able to get across the water to the audience still maintaining excellent SPL levels.
Sub wise, we chose to use an endfire configuration for 12 S33s. While it may seem a bit on the small side, the level of sub reaching the audience was outstanding. Again, this was all driven by Powersoft X4s with delays applied both horizontally and vertically along the array.
Due to the wild temperature variations and the distances involved, time aligning was somewhat of a problem, but careful tweaks before each display taking into account the temperature variations made for an excellent sound all around the audience.
